HEALTHY AND BEAUTY TIPS: COSMETICS and MAKEUP EXPIRATION
Summer is out and it’s time to go back to school. However, one of the most overlooked area in the back to school rush are cosmetics. If you are starting the new school year using the same makeup that you had last fall, you may be in need for a total makeover, perhaps not on your looks but with your makeup products.
At present, there are still no regulations in the United States which require expiration dates on cosmetics and makeups. The consumer should be aware of this information and should use their best judgment with what they use.
Generally foundations and concealers have a shelf-life of 12-18 months (that is 1 to 1 and half years). If you are using a liquid foundation, take a look if it already separated in the bottle and in this case, it has probably gone bad. Beauty Experts note that if the makeup past its prime then it will have a different consistency and be harder to apply, or worst, may have some allergic reactions on your body or skin. You may also tell if your makeup is expired with its odor or a color change.
For our pouty lips, lipstick can have a lifespan of three years, but it all depends on the formula . Sunscreen in the lipstick typically is not effective past that point.
Among all cosmetics, eye makeup has the shortest lifespan once it’s opened. This is because of the repeated exposure to microbes and bacteria. For instance, mascara should be replaced every three months. Remember that you should always discard any eye makeup which was used just before or during an eye infection. Using it over and over can cause recurring infections.
For natural products, experts say that they have a shorter shelf life because their organic ingredients are more ideal for the growth of bacteria. In addition, preservative free cosmetics should be replaced more frequently as they lack the chemicals to sustain them once opened.
If you see black spots or growth on a product or on your makeup, it should be thrown out immediately. This is a fungus and can cause infection for your skin. Simply wiping it away isn’t good enough, as you can only see the fungus that has had the most time to grow.
Important
Never add water to cosmetics. Instead of prolonging the life of your makeup. adding water to it can l cause the growth of bacteria and microscopic bugs.
Always be aware of the cosmetics that you use. Mark the date that you opened the product on the bottom to avoid a guessing game. be aware on changes in color, odor, and consistency. If you have an infection discard the products you’ve been using to avoid recurring problems.
