Fashion Tips: Maxi Dresses: Friend or Foe?
If you were to look down any High Street it’s probably a good guess that you’d see lots of lovely ladies wandering around surrounded by mountains of flowy fabric because this year the maxi dress is the summer trend.
The maxi dress has been heralded as a flattering look for everyone but if you take a look at celeb mags then you’ll know this isn’t always the case – as perfectly demonstrated recently by Alex Curran who stepped out in a white, Egyptian inspired maxi dress and ended up looking like a walking tent.
That’s the problem for some you see – all that extra fabric flapping around your legs can make you look shapeless and for shorter girls like me, this can make you look slightly like a weeble – big body, small head.
Of course, if your arms/back/chest aren’t your favourite areas then the maxi dress can cause a problem here too. Bingo wings and back can be covered up with a cardi, wrap or shrug but the chest is slightly more problematic.
For flatter chested women the bandeau style maxi dresses are a life saver, but for those of us with large chests it can be a slight problem – the bandeau styles are restricting and the halterneck/v-neck styles end up showing off a little more cleavage than we might want – it’s not always the case of course but you do have to wonder about a style that requires you to wear a cami top underneath to protect your modesty.
It’s not all bad news though – take a look around and you’ll see countless gorgeous women wandering round looking fabulous, sophisticated and even sexy in their maxi dresses. Yes, the maxi dress has evolved from hippy chic to wardrobe staple.
The good news is that maxi dresses can hide a multitude of sins. No longer do you need to breathe in for fear of your belly becoming your main feature after a big meal, nor do you have to worry about having fuzz free legs all the time. Those with ample chests can show off their assets and you can team with gladiator sandals or heels to change the look. There are loads of different styles, prints and materials and even lengths available at Very.co.uk so really there should be something for everyone.
The only way to find out of course is to try them all on and if you can get away with wearing a maxi dress then go for it – it makes for an effortless look in the day or night and is one of the most versatile looks on the high street at the moment. Just remember that sometimes less is more – don’t get swamped by too much material, and pick a style that’s right for your body shape.’
